Research and Background

Jasmina Burek, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor at Mechanical and Industrial Engineering and Principal Investigator at the BUilding REsilience through Knowledge (BUREK) Lab, which integrates research approaches that combine expertise in life cycle assessment (LCA), techno-economic analysis (TEA), optimization, air pollution, exploratory data analysis, machine learning, and other quantitative modeling to provide a robust decision-making platform for the future development of transportation systems. Her previous work includes: (1) conducted cradle-to-grave LCA for an electric scooter company permits using city level micro-data and compared with other transportation systems, (2) conducted LCA of first-generation biofuels for bus transportation, (3) calculated air emissions from road transport using COPERT software, (4) modeled refrigerated transport of dairy products, (5) calculated the national GHG and air pollution emissions from energy and transport sector, (6) performed cluster and classification analysis of agricultural machinery, (7) at present serving as a chair and/or panelist on Critical Reviews for LCA studies. I am interested to broaden research in micro-mobility, first mile and last mile delivery systems, comparison of ICE and EVs for food transportation, understanding benefits of fuel cells use in truck transportation, modeling of collection systems for circular handling and offering students project-based learning opportunities through IENG5432 Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment course.
