Alessandro Sabato

Assistant Professor
University of Massachusetts Lowell

Department of Mechanical Engineering

Research and Background

Dr. Sabato’s areas of expertise fall in the broadly defined fields of Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) and Non-destructive testing (NDT). His primary research goals are related to advance innovative sensing and data analytics to tackle built environment problems, specifically to address the resilience, sustainability, and safety issues of large-scale engineering structures and infrastructure systems. Dr. Sabato is a firm advocate of applying new advanced technologies (e.g., Micro Electro-Mechanical Systems, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, and Wireless Sensor Networks) and cutting-edge measurement techniques (e.g., non-contact and optical methods) to solve real-world, transportation-related problems. Over the years, he has conducted studies on the use of advanced sensing for monitoring the health of bridges and railroad tracks using wireless and computer-vision approaches. Dr. Sabato is currently serving as an Assistant Professor at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. Here he continues his research focused on integrating the use of computer-vision techniques with autonomous and unmanned approaches for assessing the dynamic response and monitor the behavior of materials, large-scale structures, and infrastructure systems.
