Research and Background

At the Center for Infrastructure, Transportation and Environment, Elrahman’s research focuses on the nexus of transportation and public health. Recently, he co-authored a textbook on mainstreaming public health considerations into transportation policy, planning, and implementation (https://www.elsevier.com/books/transportation-and-public-health/meyer/978-0-12-816774-8). Elrahman has authored more than 60 peer-reviewed papers and technical reports, and has organized and chaired numerous national and international conference workshops and sessions. Prior to academia, Dr. Elrahman served at the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) at different divisions, including head of the Research Coordination & Technology Transfer group at the Transportation Research & Development Bureau. His research and management experiences there spanned several divisions, including Environmental Analysis, Policy, Transit, Project Development, and Economic Development. He has extensive applied and teaching experience in transportation planning and engineering. Elrahman has served on several national research panels at the National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP), and advised on several European Commission’s sponsored research projects. He was an expert evaluator for the European Commission’s Research Horizon 2020 program. He serves on the editorial board of several academic journals as well as several Transportation Research Board’s (TRB) Committees of the National Academies. He is currently a member the Executive Subcommittee of the Transportation Research Board (TRB) on International Activities and is the immediate past co-chair of TRB’s Standing Committee on International Cooperation. He is the recipient of several awards including NYSDOT award for Outstanding Performance in Research and Service to the Department, and the TRB award for outstanding service in international activities and global cooperation. Elrahman holds a Ph.D. in Urban and Environmental Studies from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), and an M.Sc. in Transportation Planning and Engineering from the Polytechnic Institute of New York, School of Engineering, New York University. He also holds a postgraduate Certificate in Management Development from Cornell University.
