Description:

This course provides public works employees with essential knowledge to maintain a safe and productive work environment. With a strong focus on the hazards and risks specific to public works, participants will learn about safety standards, best practices in the garage and on worksites, and key guidelines for workplace well-being and safety. The course emphasizes hazard recognition and proactive response strategies in settings such as construction sites, street maintenance, and facility operations. While it includes an overview of emergency response procedures like first aid and fire safety, it is an awareness-level course rather than a certification program.

Course Objectives:

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

1. Recognize Workplace Hazards – Identify common risks in public works environments, including physical, chemical, and environmental hazards.
2. Follow Safety Protocols – Understand and apply basic safety measures to reduce risk and enhance workplace safety.
3. Understand Regulatory Standards – Gain awareness of key safety regulations, including OSHA guidelines.
4. Respond to Emergencies – Know the appropriate steps for handling accidents, injuries, and hazardous situations.
5. Use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) – Recognize the importance of PPE and its role in workplace safety.
6. Promote a Safety Mindset – Contribute to a culture of safety by recognizing unsafe conditions and encouraging best practices.

This course emphasizes practical awareness and proactive safety habits, empowering participants to help create a safer work environment.

    Scott Kinmond is a Technical Specialist and Instructor with the New Hampshire Local Technical Assistance Program (NH LTAP) at the University of New Hampshire Technology Transfer Center (UNH T2 Center). With extensive experience in transportation and infrastructure management, Scott provides expert guidance and training to local agencies across New Hampshire. His nearly 40 years of municipal experience spans a career centered around transportation and community safety with 24 years in Law Enforcement, 11 years as Chief of Police, 10 years as a Public Works Director and 5 years as a Town Administrator.  His work focuses on enhancing the technical capabilities of public works professionals, offering valuable insights into best practices for road maintenance, safety, and environmental stewardship. Scott is recognized by UNH T2 Road Scholar program as an Advanced Master Road Scholar and is also a Certified Public Manager.
