Overview

This workshop will present attendees with a basic understanding of gravel and gravel roads. It will provide information on factors affecting the condition of gravel roads and the proper techniques for maintaining a gravel road.

Topics discussed will include
• Crown and slope control
• Proper blade technique
• Grader operations
• The benefits of dust control
• Drainage effects on gravel roads

    Technical Training Specialist at UMass Transportation Center (UMTC)

     Michael Smith is the Baystate Roads Technical Training Specialist. He was a Highway Superintendent for 20 years where he developed and implemented modern road maintenance techniques. Mike was responsible for day to day operation and long range planning for the municipality.

    Before retiring in 2015, Mike was also a firefighter for 34 years. He is a lifelong resident of Heath, Massachusetts, whose teaching style includes a healthy portion of humor and student interaction. Mike can be reached at: mdsmith@umass.edu
