Two New CMV Safety Summits Announced
This fall two Commercial Motor Vehicle Safety Research Summits will take place serving the Western Service Center and the Southern Service Center. More Information is below:
Western States Commerical Vehicle Safety and CDL Compliance Summit
The Western States Commercial Vehicle Safety and CDL Compliance Summit will be held November 28-29, 2018 on the University of Colorado campus in Denver, Colorado. The Summit will bring together state law enforcement, driver licensing agency, and university representatives from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Western Service Center region. The goal is to share information regarding existing partnerships to improve commercial vehicle safety and Commercial Driver License (CDL) compliance, and to allow those states who do not currently have a partnership to learn more about establishing a partnership. Participants will have the opportunity to interact with speakers from FMCSA, the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators (AAMVA), and the National Center for State Courts, as well as from various state law enforcement agencies, driver licensing agencies, and universities.
The Summit is part of a larger project made possible with a grant from FMCSA to the Upper Great Plains Transportation Institute at North Dakota State University. Topics at the Summit will include State Best Practices, Innovative Processes, and University Partnerships to Improve Commercial Vehicle Safety and CDL Compliance; Decriminalization of Marijuana and its Impact on Drivers and Enforcement; Autonomous Vehicles; FMCSA Rules, including Electronic Logging Devices, Entry Level Driver Training, and the Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse; Best Practices using the Commercial Skills Test Information Management System (CSTIMS), Knowledge and Skills Testing, Examiner Certifications and Training; Solutions for Timely Transmission of CDL Convictions to the State Driver Licensing Agency (SDLA); Technology and Systems used by States to Enforce Federal and State Laws, Regulations and Rules; and More!
Registration and travel information will be posted this fall on the Summit website at www.ugpti.org/events/safetysummit2018/. If you would like more information, email Brenda Lantz at brenda.lantz@ndsu.edu.
Southeast CMV Safety Research Summit
The Center for Advanced Public Safety (CAPS) is pleased to host the first Southeast CMV Summit. The summit will bring together government and research personnel who have interests in CMV traffic safety with the goal of heavy interaction among university researcher, personnel from government and private agencies, law enforcement, and CMV industry representatives to present and discuss those topics that have been found to be the most critical for crash reduction and severity mitigation.
The objectives of the summit are as follows:
- To exchange CMV traffic safety information and new research with neighboring states.
- To discuss state and federal research and emerging technologies on commercial vehicle enforcement activities, and to investigate potential areas of collaboration.
- To share experiences and best practices on a wide variety of subjects, e.g., those related to issues detected in virtual weigh stations.
- To plan and establish joint law enforcement, university, and private industry partnerships for research and technology transfer efforts directed at improving CMV safety.
- To promote CMV safety by helping law enforcement to gain access to university resources able to assist with data analysis, analytics, and related topics, such as optimization and statistical processing.
- To review the design of the CVSP Metrics analytics system (currently under development at CAPS) and plan participation in activities such as beta testing and technology applications.
